Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing steady, reliable and affordable electricity in the State.
The Governor made the declaration, Wednesday in Government House, Uyo while playing host to the House of Representatives Committee On Public Assets.
Speaking through the Deputy Governor, Senator (Dr) Akon Eyakenyi, he emphasized that reliable electricity remains a catalyst for national growth, powering everything from small businesses to major industrial operations.
He lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for initiating landmark energy sector reforms through the Electricity Act, which empowers subnational governments to drive local power development.
Aligning with these reforms, the Governor highlighted the recent inauguration of the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission (AKSERC) to optimize the Ibom Power Plant, and ensure the State enjoys stable, affordable energy.
“Electricity is a catalyst for the growth of any nation and we thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR for the reforms he has implemented in the sector, which now enables subnationals to take concrete actions towards solving their power problems.
“A little over a month ago, we inaugurated the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission (AKSERC). They are tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that we provide steady, reliable and affordable electricity to our people in the nearest future.” He stated.
Speaking further, the Governor restated his administration’s strict policy against project abandonment, noting that many inherited projects have been revived and completed to avoid a waste of public funds already sunk into them.
He revealed that the State has co-opted village youth presidents into its security architecture to help protect public assets and utilities against vandalism, urging the committee to ensure its oversight leads to concrete actions by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) regarding the completion of long abandoned injection sub stations in the State.
Responding, the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Assets, Hon. Ademorin Kuye, praised Akwa Ibom residents for not vandalizing federal power assets in Abak and Ikot Ekpene, assuring the state government that the committee would advocate for joint funding models and franchise arrangements with NDPHC to bring stranded power infrastructure to immediate completion.
He commended the Governor for being among the first set of Governors to implement power reforms in their States, describing him as a visionary and hard working leader.
Other members of the delegation included Hon. Dr. Patrick Umoh (Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency, Akwa Ibom State), Hon. Ja’afaru Yakubu (Bali/Gassol Federal Constituency, Taraba State), Hon. Olatunji Akinosi (Ado-Odo/Ota Federal Constituency, Ogun State), and the Clerk of the Committee, Mrs. Cordelia Aromosun.
