The House of Representatives has urged the Bureau for Public Enterprise, BPE, to account for about N10 billion alleged used to register two companies for the Nigeria Postal Service, NIPOST.

Rep. Bamidele Salam, Chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts made the call in Abuja at the resumed investigative hearing of the committee.

“No reasonable Nigerian will believe that N10. 4 billion was spent to register the two companies.

”These companies eventually folded up one year after takeoff,” he said.

He also said the companies, NIPOST Transport and Logistics Ltd., and NIPOST Property reportedly took off in May 2023, and folded up through a Presidential directive in May 2024.

The BPE Head of Finance and Accounts who stood in for the Director-General of the Agency, Mr Imam Rilwan, told the committee that of the said amount, N10 million was given to the two companies for their take off.

He said that about N400 million was given to the BPE to prepare the ground for the takeoff of the companies.

He said the issue of registering the two companies for NIPOST was approved in 2017.

This, he said, paved the way for BPE to expend about N423 million in registering and carrying out other activities for the eventual take off of the companies.

He said when the money was eventually released in 2023 the bureau had to recover its money, adding that the N423 million given to the BPE was used to rent office accommodation among other essential services.

He said while the bureau paid rent for the two companies from 2022, the companies took possession of the offices in May 2023, while they folded up in May 2024.

He said all property belonging to the two companies had been officially handed over to NIPOST management.

Responding, Mr Salam said spending money from the government coffers before the money was released was a violation of the provisions of the Public Procurement Act.

Mr Salam, however, directed the Director-General of BPE, Ayodeji Gbeleyi, to personally appear before the committee on September 11 at 12 noon with all relevant documents relating to the transaction.

At about 0311 hours on 1st October 2026, the Command received credible information that suspected criminals had vandalised a community transformer in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area and carted away several components in a tricycle before transferring the stolen items into a red minibus.

Acting swiftly on the information, operatives of the Command mobilised and intercepted the suspected vehicle along the Etinan route. During the ensuing pursuit, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the Police before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing into a nearby bush.

The suspected pirates eventually abandoned their boat and escaped into a nearby creek, while the Police successfully rescued the victims unharmed.

He further reiterated that all suspects remain presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.

The Command therefore urges residents of Akwa Ibom State to remain vigilant and continue to provide credible and timely information to the Police through appropriate channels. Members of the public are also strongly advised not to confront suspected criminals or take the law into their own hands, but to promptly report suspicious persons, movements and activities to the Police.

A 34 year old, James John, a.k.a. “Kpoi,” male, of Itak Ifaha Village, who was identified as one of the principal suspects allegedly involved in illegal mining activities within the area has been arrested by operatives of
Akwa Ibom Police Command.

A Press statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, indicates that the arrest follows an intensified crackdown on illegal mining activities across the State in furtherance of the Command’s resolve to protect the State’s mineral resources, prevent environmental degradation and dismantle criminal networks exploiting mineral resources without lawful authority.

“In continuation of the enforcement drive announced by the Command on 27 September 2026 under the caption “Police Declare War on Illegal Mining in Akwa Ibom State,” operatives of the Command, on 28 September 2026 at about 1100 hours, stormed suspected illegal mining sites located at Okorutip, Atia and Ndito Ekaiba coastal villages in Ibeno Local Government Area.”

Other persons found at the mining locations reportedly fled the scene upon sighting the Police operatives and are currently being traced as investigations continue.

Items sighted and recovered at the suspected illegal mining locations include bags containing a mineral substance identified as titanium ore, commonly referred to as “black sand.” The recovered materials have been secured and will be subjected to appropriate examination and verification as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Command is particularly concerned about the activities of individuals and groups engaging in the unlawful extraction, processing, storage and movement of mineral resources, especially in coastal communities, where such activities have the potential to cause significant environmental damage and undermine lawful regulatory processes.

The arrest and recovery form part of the Command’s broader operational strategy to identify the individuals financing, coordinating and facilitating illegal mining activities, rather than merely targeting persons found at mining sites.

The Commissioner further reiterates that there will be no safe haven for illegal mining syndicates in Akwa Ibom State. Individuals, groups, sponsors, financiers, collaborators and other persons involved in the unlawful exploitation of the State’s mineral resources are advised to immediately desist from such activities or face the full weight of the law.

The Command will continue to work with relevant regulatory authorities, sister security agencies, traditional institutions and responsible members of the public to identify and disrupt illegal mining operations across the State.

Members of the public, particularly residents of mining-prone communities, are encouraged to provide timely and credible information on suspected illegal mining activities to the Police and other appropriate authorities. Such information will be treated with the necessary confidentiality.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command remains resolute in protecting lives and property, safeguarding the State’s natural resources and ensuring that those who violate the law are brought to justice.

Investigation is still ongoing.
