Akwa Ibom judiciary begins 2025-2026 legal year with assurances of continuous collaboration from the executive

In a bid to sustain peace and security in Akwa Ibom State, Governor Umo Eno has pledged his administration’s continuos commitment to a strong working relationship with the judiciary.

The Governor gave the assurance while speaking at a special inter-denominational church service at The Believers Assembly (Evang) Nigeria, to mark the opening of the 2025/2026 legal year.

He commended the State Chief Judge, Justice Ekaete Obot, for the warm and robust collaboration between the Executive and Judicial Arms of government, which, according to him, has been fruitful and productive.

“We have chosen collaboration in place of contention, we have respected and maintained the boundaries between our two Arms as enshrined in the principles of Separation of Power, and the result has been a seamless relationship that puts the interest of our people at the centre of our engagements.

He acknowledged the efforts of the judiciary to maintain peace and ensure orderliness in the society, and assured that the Executive arm will continue to ensure a conducive environment for everyone to deliver on their responsibilities.

The Governor warned against attempts by any individual or group to stifle the peace in the State, stressing that where there is perceived injustice, parties involved should approach the courts and allow it address such issues, without engaging  in sub judicial acts.

He said the State government has approved the recruitment of one thousand staff to fill vacant positions in the state judiciary, adding, “This is aimed at ensuring that we have more hands to expedite court processes so that those who breached or violated the law are tried speedily and those adjudged innocent released to pursue their legitimate tasks. This will eventually lead to the decongestion of our prisons.

“We have also made provisions for the construction of Evidence Rooms in a number of police stations in Uyo in the 2026 Budget as a way of expediting the conviction of criminals and the discharge of those whom evidence may lead to their exoneration,” he said.

He emphasized that all applicants would go through the State employment portal, saying, “There are no slots and there are no godfathers. Everything relating to the recruitment exercise will be done in the most credible and transparent manner, which is what the judiciary is known for.”

He congratulated the judiciary on the opening of a new legal year, saying, “As you mark this New Legal Year, I pray for more spirit of unity, collaboration, and may our State remain an oasis of peace and tranquillity, and may our youths continue to Arise and shun all anti-social and morally repugnant tendencies that may put them in the crosshairs of the law.”

Earlier in his message, the Prelate of Believers Assembly, Prof. Isaiah Isong stressed on the need to enthrone the rule of Law, saying “May our Judges become known not only for their knowledge of law, but for their fear of God. May our lawyers serve not only as advocates for clients, but also as ministers of truth.

“Let no man in this land be too powerful to be corrected; and no man too poor to be protected. Let human rights be more than words in the constitution,’ he added.

Leading members of the Judiciary on a thanksgiving, the Chief Judge of the State, Hon. Justice Ekaette Obot, appreciated God for the judiciary,  and also commended the State Governor for creating a conducive environment for the smooth operation of the judiciary.

She specifically appreciated the Governor for building a Judiciary village and other welfare packages to judges and other members of the judiciary, and assured of continuous collaboration and partnership for the peace and development of the State.

END OF THE ROAD FOR TRANSFORMER VANDALS IN AKWA IBOM AS POLICE ARRESTS TWO SUSPECTS

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recorded significant operational successes in its sustained efforts to combat criminality, protect critical infrastructure and safeguard lives and property across the State.

At about 0311 hours on 1st October 2026, the Command received credible information that suspected criminals had vandalised a community transformer in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area and carted away several components in a tricycle before transferring the stolen items into a red minibus.

Acting swiftly on the information, operatives of the Command mobilised and intercepted the suspected vehicle along the Etinan route. During the ensuing pursuit, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the Police before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing into a nearby bush.

A coordinated search operation was immediately launched, with valuable assistance from members of the community. At about 0514 hours, two suspects were arrested. They were identified as Chinedu Onwe, 31, male, of Ikwo LGA, Ebonyi State, and Enobong Jonah, 35, male, of Otoro Abak Village, Abak LGA, Akwa Ibom State.

Items recovered during the operation include three large transformer solenoids, one live cartridge, assorted electrical tools, one large steel cutter, one Tecno mobile phone, one tricycle allegedly used to convey the vandalised components, and a red minibus with registration number ABIA 986 SSM.

In a separate operation, the Command successfully rescued victims of an alleged sea piracy and abduction incident along the waterways of Ibeno Local Government Area.

At about 0700 hours on 30th September 2026, information was received that a group of fishermen, including a Ghanaian national, had been attacked and abducted by suspected sea pirates while travelling towards the Atlantic Ocean.

Personnel of the Asawana Mobile Police Base were immediately mobilised to the area. The operatives subsequently encountered the suspected pirates around the ocean boundary between Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.

The suspected pirates eventually abandoned their boat and escaped into a nearby creek, while the Police successfully rescued the victims unharmed.

Items recovered from the scene include one 200HP outboard engine, one 40HP outboard engine with a W23 flying boat, five 40HP outboard engines, three 9.9HP outboard engines, five containers of mixed PMS, four empty containers, three gas cylinders, mobile phones, 29 SIM cards, one power bank, one starter motor battery, one torchlight and an identity card bearing a NIN number, among other items.

The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, mnipr, commended the officers and men involved in both operations for their courage, professionalism, vigilance and prompt response.

The Commissioner equally appreciated members of the affected communities whose timely information and cooperation contributed significantly to the successes recorded, stressing that effective policing remains a shared responsibility between the Police and the public.

CP Azare warned individuals and criminal networks involved in the vandalisation of critical infrastructure, sea piracy, abduction and other forms of violent crime that the Command will continue to identify, pursue and bring offenders to justice within the ambit of the law.

He further reiterated that all suspects remain presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.

The Command therefore urges residents of Akwa Ibom State to remain vigilant and continue to provide credible and timely information to the Police through appropriate channels. Members of the public are also strongly advised not to confront suspected criminals or take the law into their own hands, but to promptly report suspicious persons, movements and activities to the Police.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command remains resolute in its commitment to protecting lives and property, preventing and detecting crime, maintaining public order, and ensuring the safety and security of all residents.

SECURITY CONCERNS: POLICE WITHDRAWS APPROVAL FOR ACTIVITIES MARKING NIGERIA’S INDEPENDENCE IN AKWA IBOM

Following credible intelligence available to the Akwa Ibom State Police Command indicating plans by some individuals to exploit scheduled political activities to cause disturbances and threaten public peace, and in the overriding interest of public safety and security, all approvals earlier granted for political rallies, meetings, processions and other related public political activities scheduled to hold on Thursday, 1st October 2026, anywhere within Akwa Ibom State are hereby directed to be rescheduled.

Consequently, no political party, group, association or its supporters should proceed with any activity on 1st October 2026 on the strength of any approval previously issued by the Command.

All parties and groups concerned are advised to liaise with the Police Command and propose alternative dates, which will be considered in line with prevailing security circumstances.

According to a Press Statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, This proactive measure has become necessary following emerging security concerns and intelligence assessments indicating the need to prevent any individual or group from taking advantage of such gatherings to foment trouble, cause a breakdown of law and order, or endanger innocent members of the public.

The Command therefore calls on all political parties, candidates, supporters, youth groups and other stakeholders to exercise maximum restraint and comply strictly with this directive. Security agencies will maintain heightened vigilance across the State to ensure the continued protection of lives and property.

The Commissioner of Police appreciates the understanding and cooperation of all concerned and emphasizes that the directive is purely precautionary, non-partisan, and taken solely in the overall interest of peace, security and public order in Akwa Ibom State.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command remains committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all lawful political and civic activities and assures stakeholders that requests for alternative dates will be given appropriate consideration.

POLICE ARRESTS ONE ILLEGAL MINER, RECOVERS SUSPECTED TITANIUM ORE IN AKWA IBOM

A 34 year old, James John, a.k.a. “Kpoi,” male, of Itak Ifaha Village, who was identified as one of the principal suspects allegedly involved in illegal mining activities within the area has been arrested by operatives of
Akwa Ibom Police Command.

A Press statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, indicates that the arrest follows an intensified crackdown on illegal mining activities across the State in furtherance of the Command’s resolve to protect the State’s mineral resources, prevent environmental degradation and dismantle criminal networks exploiting mineral resources without lawful authority.

“In continuation of the enforcement drive announced by the Command on 27 September 2026 under the caption “Police Declare War on Illegal Mining in Akwa Ibom State,” operatives of the Command, on 28 September 2026 at about 1100 hours, stormed suspected illegal mining sites located at Okorutip, Atia and Ndito Ekaiba coastal villages in Ibeno Local Government Area.”

Other persons found at the mining locations reportedly fled the scene upon sighting the Police operatives and are currently being traced as investigations continue.

Items sighted and recovered at the suspected illegal mining locations include bags containing a mineral substance identified as titanium ore, commonly referred to as “black sand.” The recovered materials have been secured and will be subjected to appropriate examination and verification as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Command is particularly concerned about the activities of individuals and groups engaging in the unlawful extraction, processing, storage and movement of mineral resources, especially in coastal communities, where such activities have the potential to cause significant environmental damage and undermine lawful regulatory processes.

The arrest and recovery form part of the Command’s broader operational strategy to identify the individuals financing, coordinating and facilitating illegal mining activities, rather than merely targeting persons found at mining sites.

The Commissioner further reiterates that there will be no safe haven for illegal mining syndicates in Akwa Ibom State. Individuals, groups, sponsors, financiers, collaborators and other persons involved in the unlawful exploitation of the State’s mineral resources are advised to immediately desist from such activities or face the full weight of the law.

The Command will continue to work with relevant regulatory authorities, sister security agencies, traditional institutions and responsible members of the public to identify and disrupt illegal mining operations across the State.

Members of the public, particularly residents of mining-prone communities, are encouraged to provide timely and credible information on suspected illegal mining activities to the Police and other appropriate authorities. Such information will be treated with the necessary confidentiality.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command remains resolute in protecting lives and property, safeguarding the State’s natural resources and ensuring that those who violate the law are brought to justice.

Investigation is still ongoing.
