The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA), Obong Dr. Prince Ikim, has stated that the state government is committed to making waste recycling a reality.
Ikim said this during a meeting with the Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation (AKICORP), led by the MD/CEO, Pastor Imo-Abasi Jacob, alongside AKSEPWMA and Afia Consulting.
He highlighted that Governor Umo Eno’s strong interest in recycling stems from its potential to create employment opportunities, generate revenue, and bring numerous other benefits to the state.
Ikim assured the delegation of the agency’s readiness to adopt global best practices in waste management to ensure the success of the initiative.
In his remarks, Pastor Imo-Abasi Jacob, MD/CEO of AKICORP, welcomed the team, emphasizing their interest in the investment aspect and the role the government must play in turning the plan into a reality.
Pastor Jacob urged the delegation to expedite the documentation of the discussions, ensuring the move from presentation to appraisal, analysis, and consideration at the executive council.
Earlier, the delegation requested land for the factory site and policies to guide their operations, citing China as a model for transferring equipment to the state for the waste-to-wealth project.
The delegation also outlined that the factory would produce fertilizers, waste bins, and other related products once established in the state.
Among the delegation members were Dr. Chief Ayi Etim Effiong, Executive Secretary of Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA); Akinlalu Akinnola, Executive Director; and Lawrence Bassey, Executive Director.
