As previously announced, the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) has commenced extensive environmental surveillance across Uyo metropolis, deploying Waste Marshalls to support Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda for environmental reform.
Recall that the Chairman of the Agency, Obong (Dr) Prince Ikim, in a press release last month, emphasized the commitment of the state government to introduce stricter measures to combat unlawful waste disposal. He stated that the Surveillance Team would begin operations on November 1.
On the first day of operations, newsmen who monitored the activities of the AKSEPWMA-retrained Ibom Community Watch Marshalls reported the apprehension of at least 12 violators caught dumping waste at unauthorized locations.
When journalists visited hotspots such as Nwaniba Road, Ikot Ekpene Road, Oron Road, Airport Road, and Shelter Afrique, they observed the Marshalls actively enforcing compliance and engaging with residents.
In the meantime, the presence of the Waste Marshalls has been met with positive feedback from some respondents, with residents noting a marked improvement in sanitation and order in their neighborhoods.
The Ibom Community Watchers were seen exhibiting professionalism while showing readiness to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
They took time to educate first-time offenders on Ikot Ekpene Road, Ekpri Nsukara by Nwaniba Road, and Calabar Itu Highway, informing them about designated dump points and the approved hours of 6 PM to 6 AM for waste disposal in the state.
Meanwhile, residents have acknowledged their civility and balanced approach, with some respondents calling for stricter penalties for repeat offenders to maintain the progress achieved on the first day.
