Etinan Local Government Council has paid for 500 students writing the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board Examination in 2025.
The Chairman of Council, Hon Uko Umoh, disclosed this at the formal presentation of cash to students selected across all the secondary schools in the area.
Hon Uko Umoh said the Council decided to key into the free and compulsory education policy of the state by bearing the cost of registering students participating in the 2025 UTME from Etinan.
“There is always the fear of where will I get money for JAMB, that is why we are paying for you today.
“We will not stop here but whosoever that will score above 360 will be sponsored through his or her university education by the council. That is our own way of bringing back the glory of Etinan as the brain basket of the state” the chairman stated.
The Chairman also expressed the hope that the effort of the council will yield positive result in the next 15 years, saying, he sees captain of industries, top government officials emerge from this process embark upon by the council.
Earlier, the Supervisor for Education, Mr. Ime Okpon, thanked the Chairman and the Council for the kind approval which has gone a long way to alleviate the financial burden on peasant parents who desire to see their children in tertiary institutions.
Also speaking, the consultant on the project, Ambassador Princess Mfonobong Ekwere also thanked the Chairman for investing in the future.
She disclosed that the seed which was first planted in 2024 has already yielded fruit with Enobong Patrick gaining admission into the Akwa Ibom State University to study Banking and Finance while Peace Namso got admission into University of Uyo to read Medicine and Surgery but was however denied admission due to her age.
Registration for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination began on February 3, and will be concluded on March 8, 2025.
The ceremony was witnessed by the Vice Chairman, Hon Imaobong Michael, Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon Ekerete Umoh, Secretary of the Council, Hon Idorenyin Udo, Councilors and Supervisors, Directors led by Dr Isaac Udoka.
