Rotary Club Uyo Metropolis Visits Etinan Primary Health Centre

Rotary Club Uyo Metropolis District 9142 has donated medical equipment that will enhance maternal and Child health in Etinan rural communities to Etinan Primary Health Centre located along Secretariat road, Etinan.

Items donated include a Sphygmomanometer, a fetal Doppler, a delivery tray comprising a rectangular holder with cover, Artery forceps, Episiotomy scissors, Tissue Forceps Gallipot with cover and needle holder.

Others include two Digital Thermometer, Pedal Suction Machine and a Stethoscope.

Receiving the items, the Chairman of Etinan Council, Hon Uko Umoh, thanked Rotary Club for choosing Etinan Primary Health Centre for the kind donation.

The Council boss regretted the high rate of maternal and child mortality in Nigeria, a situation where Nigeria is now regarded as the worst places in the world to give birth according to a BBC Africa report of June 2025.

“This underscores the value of this donation and training of our health professionals as embarked upon by Rotary Club. Training is key to maternal and child health as most of the deaths recorded are preventable and avoidable”

He also listed the achievements of his administration in the health sector to include medical outreach which had far reaching impact, participation of the local government in the various immunization programmes as well renovation of Primary Health Centres with that of Ndon Utim already completed.

The Chairman while commending Rotary Club of Uyo metropolis for the initiative, called on individuals, corporate bodies and organisations to partner the local government in improving and enhancing not just maternal and child health but the entire populace in the local government.

Earlier, the President of Rotary Club of Uyo metropolis, Rotarian Uyai Edidiong Francis, had informed the chairman that Etinan was chosen as one of the 10 local government areas to benefit in the donation of items and training of health professionals in infant resuscitation techniques aimed at improving maternal and child health in the state.

Rotarian Uyai also said aside from the donation, there will be a train the trainer workshop that will be held in Uyo for health professionals by the club, pointing out that, not every child born still that is actually dead.

“It is alarming that women are losing their lives during childbirth and children are dying during delivery. If we are able to give the Primary Health Centres some equipment being the closest to the people, it will help reduce maternal and Child mortality and improve their health”

In a goodwill message, the Medical Director of Premier Medical Services, Prof Nsikak Udoka, urged health professionals to think more of saving lives which is their primary calling by being committed and passionate in the discharge of their duties.

Mr Stanley Chika who represented Premier Hospital being a partner of Rotary Club, described the hospital as a duly registered medical facility that promotes maternal and child health.

Present at the event were the Council Secretary, Hon Idorenyin Udo, Chief of Staff to the Chairman, Pastor Ubong Inyang, Supervisor of Health in the Local Government, Mr. Emmanuel Sampson, Chairman of the Legislative Committee on Health, Hon Nse Sambo, Hon Idongesit Ikpe as well as the Director of Primary Health in Etinan, Mrs Ekaette Ukpong.

The Rotary Club delegation also included Rotarian Utomobong Amalu and Rotarian Idorenyin Nyong, Rotarian Umana among others.
