The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal φsays partnership with National Assembly will go a long way in tackling environmental issues across the country.
The minister stated this when he paid a courtesy visit on the Chairman, House of Representatives committee on public procurement, Rt. Hon Unyime Idem.
The minister listed some of the responsibilities of the ministry to include controlling environmental issues, protection and conservation of natural resources, formulation of policies to curb desertification and deforestation; the management of flood, erosion and pollution, as well as climate change and clean energy.
“These issues demand workable partnership with the national assembly and that is why we are here to call on the national assemble to work with the ministry in securing our environment”
Responding, Rep. Unyime Idem assured the minister that
National Assembly will not lose sight of its mandate to make laws that are eco-friendly.
According to the Ukanafun/Oruk Anam federal lawmaker, “the impact of climate change is severely felt across the world, with Nigeria inclusive, and human activities is one of the biggest factors.
It is therefore our responsibility as a National Assembly to make laws and strength the already existing ones, to allow for the protection of our environment.”
“While we make the laws, it is the responsibility of every Nigerian to play his/her role to keep the environment safe and clean. That’s what we owe nature. If we don’t do this, nature fights back, and that’s the effect we’re experiencing in the scorching heat, the floods, ecological challenges, among others, in several parts of the country.”
Rep. Idem used the opportunity to remind state governments that there is need to take proactive steps to mitigate the flood warning, which was handed down by the Federal Government.
Recall that the federal government had written 31 states, warning them of the risk of imminent flooding between April and November 2024.
