CDS Calls for security education, stringent anti terrorism laws in the fight against insecurity
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has called for the inclusion security tas a curriculum in the Nigerian education system.
Speaking when he appeared on Channels TV programme, Politics Today, General Musa opined that such action will instill security consciousness in every Nigerian child.
“Give every Nigerian security awareness. The world is becoming too dangerous with people killing for no just reason. It is important we teach our children self defence, combat skills and the need to be physically fit”
General Musa lamented the porous nature of our border, saying, the time has come for a thorough security check at our borders. “We need to build walls along our borders especially the ,1,500KM stretch, fix security cameras and do a thorough security check before we allow people into our country”
He also emphasized the need for a comprehensive data bank for Nigerians such that every Nigerian has a security number which will make it possible to track criminals once they have committed crime.
On the deployment of technology in the fight against terrorism, General Musa, said the war between Russia and Ukraine has skyrocketed the prices of military equipment. “Security is very expensive anywhere in the world. Countries are producing their own weapons. We are working towards producing our own weapons within Nigeria because as long as you depend on foreign countries for supply you remain a bigger. A drone cost a hundred thousand dollars, how many will you buy?”
On prosecution of terror suspects, General Musa, called for the unbundling of certain legislation to give room for speedy trial of suspects. ” The legal system is frustrating, we should make the laws to be more stringent. I will not suggest a tribunal because we are in a democracy but the legal system needs to be unbundled for speedy trial of suspects.
General Musa expressed optimism that Nigeria is winning the war against terrorism and called for information from locals, dividends of democracy from the government as poor infrastructure is also working against prompt response in a case of emergency.
“Schools and market are reopening, farmers are going back to farms but the people must do a background check of people in their environment. The government is committed to the security of every Nigerian “
