The Executive Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Ethical and Attitudinal Reorientation Commission, Dr Dorothy Thompson, has urged political parties and politicians contesting for public offices in the 2024 Local Government elections to adhere to the advice of Governor Umo Eno and stay on issue-based campaigns in selling their manifesto to the people.

Dr Thompson made the call on Thursday in Uyo while speaking to newsmen following the official flag-off of Campaigns for the Local Government Election slated for October 5, 2024, by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at the Uyo Sports Stadium.

The EARCOM boss urged political parties and candidates participating in the election to prioritise the overall interest of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria as a whole in their Campaigns and avoid hate speech, violence, character assassination, public incitement and intimidation of opponents to ensure that the elections are peaceful, free, fair, and credible.

She stressed that all political actors should heed the clarion call of Governor Umo Eno on political actors to “focus on issue-based Campaign and abhor insults, character assassination and blemish”, as he presented flags to Chairmanship Candidates of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) from the 31 Local Government Areas of the State.

EARCOM, Dr Thompson said is concerned about the 2024 Local Government election and urges every socially responsible citizen of voting age to embrace their civic obligation by participating fully in the exercise of their democratic franchise.

While commending Governor Umo Eno for ensuring a peaceful ambience and a level playing field for all political parties in the State which she argued is a prerequisite for the conduct of the election, Dr Thompson harped that there is no way we can have a nation without peace or go our normal lives without peace.

She accordingly appealed to to all the political players to go about their electioneering campaigns peacefully and create a buzz about their blueprints for good governance and sustainable development in line with the ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno.
