Tuesday’s plenary at the Senate Chambers witnessed a tensed moment as chairman of 10th National Assembly, Senator Godswill Akpabio bowed to pressure by apologizing to Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over his nightclub comment against the Kogi lawmaker.1

Akpabio said he will not deliberately denigrate any woman because his wife is a woman and he also has four beautiful daughters who are women.

He regretted that his comment was misunderstood and completely taken out of context by social media commentators.

Last week, Akpabio told Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, senator representing Kogi central not to speak like she was in a “night club”.

Akpoti-Uduaghan had spoken without being recognised by the senate president.

Addressing the Senate in plenary on Tuesday, Akpabio said he would never intentionally denigrate any woman.

“I will not intentionally denigrate any woman. The connotation was totally misunderstood. Instead of thinking of the nature of what was said. I will not intentionally denigrate any woman and I always pray that God will uplift women, ” he said.

The senate president said his phone and that of his wife have been bombarded with calls and text messages, most of them insults.
