Poor Leadership and governance in Hospital Management worries Pharmacists in Akwa Ibom

A call for paradigm shift in the appointment of management staff for hospitals has been made by Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State.

In a communique released at the end of the opening ceremony of Pharmacy Week 2023 held at Helemah Event Centre, Uyo Akwa Ibom State, PSN decried the existence of Master-Servant relationship in our hospitals and the health sector at large.

They described a situation where management positions in hospitals are ceded to only a certain category of professional as unacceptable.”It is only a team work approach to healthcare delivery, where every health professional with requisite training in Hospital or Health administration can have opportunity to superintend over our Hospitals, that would drive optimal health outcomes” the communique reads.

PSN also called for a paradigm shift in the health sector in Akwa Ibom state that would ensure adequate training and mentoring of young pharmacists through the institution of internship programs in our General Hospitals.

They also encouraged the Akwa Ibom state government to reap the low hanging opportunities offered by local manufacturing of Pharmaceutical products to shore up the revenue base of the state and create employment ,by expanding and commercializing the drug manufacturing unit of the central medical stores.

While commending the state government for giving health care especially the primary health centres a priority, PSN wondered why some hospitals in Akwa Ibom State are still without a Pharmacist.

They called for the immediate employment of pharmacists to give healthcare consumers the benefits of pharmaceutical care and guarantees of safety in drug therapy.
In a keynote address, Prof Noel Wannang said without drugs and Pharmacists, the health sector is useless.
Prof Noel also called for a paradigm shift by practitioners where there is need for change in practice, ethics and workforce.

The occassion was chaired by Dr Chris Eromosele. The key note address was delivered by Prof Noel Wannang , council member West African Post- graduate college of Pharmacy. The event was graced by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His excellency Pastor Umo Bassey Eno who was ably represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Health/ Personal Physician to the Governor, Dr Emmanuel John and the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly, Rt.Hon.
