Following an incidence of oil spillage that happened in some coastal communities in ONNA Local Government Area, the Chairman of the Transition Committee for ONNA has written to both state and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
In a letter signed by by the council chairman, National Witness gathered that an oil spill incident occurred in the coastal communities, including Ine Edor, Ntungho Akata, Urua Edor, Ine Ukpana, Ine Ikwe, and Ine Ekpat Okuk.
In the etter, the chairman of council described the incidence of oil spill in communities within his domain as a devastating event wilth a profound impact on the lives of our people, who rely on fishing and other marine activities for their livelihood. ” I am writing to bring to your attention a matter of great importance and urgency, which has affected the livelihood of our people and our environment”
The oil spill has not only destroyed the marine ecosystem but has also contaminated our water sources, rendering them unsafe for consumption. This has led to significant health concerns and economic losses to the affected communities.
‘In light of this situation, we kindly appeal to you, the Federal and Akwa Ibom State Governments, and Exxon Mobil, to come to the aid of the people of ONNA. We request that you take immediate action to contain the oil spill, clean up the affected areas, and provide necessary medical assistance and compensation to those affected by this disaster.
We believe that together, we can work towards finding a sustainable solution to this crisis and rebuilding the lives of our people. We look forward to your prompt response and action in this matter” the letter concluded.
