The Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has passionately called on Governor Umo Eno to intervene in the fate of casual workers in the service of Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation.
In a letter to the state Council of the Union dated 5th of January, 2026, the affected casual workers lamented among other things, the none payment of their stipends for over three years.
At the Congress of the Union held on Thursday, January 15 2026, the Union deliberated on the letter and appealed to His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, Ph.D., to look into the many years of ill-treatment meted out to the “Casual Workers” of the AKBC, also referred to as “Casual Artistes”.
The Union therefore called on the compassionate governor to give instructions for the immediate payment of outstanding arrears as well as absorb them into the state civil service with their rank.
“We appeal to the governor in his usual compassionate manner and magnanimity clear off the arrears and when absorbing them, the number of years that they have served the state should be counted in for them” the communique reads in part.
The Union also discussed the issue of insecurity along Akwa Ibom waterways especially in Mbo Local Government Area and called on the government and security agencies to put a stop to the activities of sea pirates.
The Union also commended the government for the Christmas gift to the union, for the timely action on potholes on our roads as well as the release of funds for payment of backlog of gratuity and urged the governor to extend his compassionate hand to those who recently retired from service.
