Activities to mark the 64th independence anniversary of Nigeria has started in Etinan with an Interdenominational Church service.
Led by the Transition Committee Chairman for the area, Hon.(Lady) Lawrencia Etuk, the people gathered at Holy Family Catholic Church, Asuna, to thank God for the peace in Etinan Local Government Area and the oneness of Nigeria 64 years after independence.
The parish priest, Very Rev. Fr. Felix Akpan, in a homily, urged Christians to live sacrificial life by supporting the poor and homeless in these challenging times.
He called on those in positions of authority to use their influence to better the society and improve the lives of the masses, particularly in the area of job creation for the youth.
Rev. Fr. Akpan prayed for God’s guidance on the nation’s leaders and encouraged all Christians to be responsible citizens.
In her address, Hon. Lawrencia Etuk expressed gratitude to God for His protection and for the peace and unity currently enjoyed by the people of Etinan. She also took a moment to reflect on the the death of Pastor (Mrs.) Patience Umo Eno, the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State saying she was
a tireless supporter of women, children, and the vulnerable in our state.
“As an ordained Minister of the Gospel, she embodied humility and loyalty, always standing by her husband and championing the cause of the less privileged. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace”
Hon. Etuk further highlighted the significance of the Independence Day celebration, noting that 64 years after Nigeria’s independence, there are many reasons to be grateful for the journey so far, even as the country continues to seek divine guidance for the future.
The event was attended by several distinguished personalities, including the Commissioner for Justice, Uko Udom (SAN), the Paramount Ruler of Etinan LGA, Edidem Aniefiok Monday Akpanobong, Lady Barr. Ime Udom, Mrs. Emily Uko Umoh, Rt. Hon. Inemesit Itina (PhD), Dr. Akan Udom, Hon Idorenyin Thompson, Hon Attah Frank, Hon Eno Okoko, Mrs Grace Frank, and all the supervisors, the Head of Service of Etinan LGA, Mrs. Mercy Ntekim, chairman of NULGE Comrade Ifiok Marculey as well as directors and heads of departments.
