Ibom Power: Gov Umo Eno Sets To Open Can of Worms
The last may not have been heard of the controversy sourounding the unceremonious sack of the managing director of Ibom power plant, Engr Mayen Etukudoh.
Speaking at the foundation laying ceremony of Aviation Village on Monday 18th November,2024, the governor announced that a panel will soon be set up by the state government to probe the financial record of the company from 2015 to 2024.
“I am setting up a probe panel to investigate the activities of the power company, to ascertain why the power company is still running at a loss, and why the company is owing the gas supplier.
“Any investment of government that is not yielding profit, I’ll remove the MD, I don’t care the blackmail. We are determined, it is time that we must reap from our investments”, the Governor said.
He decried a situation where government continue to invest money into profit yielding ventures without commisurate returns on investment.
“We cannot keep investing the people’s money in projects that are not yielding results, that is not how I was raised”, Pastor Eno added
Governor Umo Eno, a doctorate degree holder in public administration has brought fiscal discipline into government business starting from the budget process.
For the first time in the history of the state, the governor spent days participating in the budgeting process where funds are made available for every item in the 2025 budget estimate.
The governor has also shown himself as one who places the interest of the people above personal interest as revealed in the sack of Engr Mayen Etukudoh.
Mayen Etukudoh was with Transmission Company of Nigeria, Abuja, before he was brought home by the immediate past governor, Mr. Udom’ Emmanuel to head the power plant where he ran it bankrupt.
It could be recalled that during a media parley to mark the 36th anniversary of Akwa Ibom state, the governor had expressed disapproval in the failure of the company to turn in profit to the state coffers despite huge investment by the government
