Council Boss Appoints Capt Uwemedimo Bassey Rtd As Special Assistant For Legionaries In Etinan
In a bid to bring members of the Nigerian legion in Etinan closer to government, Capt Uwemedimo Bassey Rtd has been appointed a Special Assistant to the Chairman on Legionaries Affairs.

The appointment was announced at the grand finale of activities marking the 2026 armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day held at the Council’s Cenotaph, Etinan.
The Chairman in response to an address presented by the chairman of legion in Etinan, Major Michael Ukpong, who had lamented the absence of an office accommodation for members 55 years after it was established.

Hon Uko Umoh who said he holds members of the legion in high esteem having been born and brought up in the barracks, announced that an office space will be provided for them within the Council once renovation work is completed on some of the Council’s buildings.
He announced donation of 500 10kg bags of rice and 500 10kg bags of garry for members of the legion as their Christmas and new year gift as well as a cash donation of One Million Naira only(N1,000,000.00).
Earlier, the Chairman of Nigeria Legion in Etinan, Major Michael Ukpong had traced the history of January 15 date to the end of the first world war in 1918 and its final adoption in 1945 to celebrate veterans who lost their lives for world peace.

He thanked the Chairman for his kind donation during 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance day celebration but however appealed for an office space for members of the legion, accommodation in the sharing of palliative and a monthly subvention to enable Etinan chapter attend meetings at the state level for onward dissemination of information to members at the grassroots.
The Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day featured laying of wreaths at the tomb of unknown soldiers, a minute silence in honour of departed soldiers, seven gun shot salute as well as inspection of a guard of honour by the Chairman of Council.

The year 2026 armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration was attended by the wife of the Chairman, Mrs Emily Uko, Vice Chairman of Council, Hon Imaobong Michael, Leader of the Legislative Council. Hon Ekerete Umoh and all councilors, Secretary of Council Hon Idorenyin Udo and all Supervisors, Head of Service. Mr. Saviour Okon and all the Directors, the Paramount Ruler, His Majesty, Edidem Aniefiok Monday Akpanobong and other traditional rulers, the Chaplain of Etinan , Arch Bishop Idem Ikon, the political class led by the chairman of APC, Comrade Israel Tommy, women groups and wives of legionaries and widows of fallen heros.
