The member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency Rt. Hon. Unyime Idem, has charged the Nigeria Customs Service to step up its responsibility of providing effective clearance of goods crossing the borders and anti-smuggling services.
Rep. Idem stressed that this will help the country in shoring up revenue and promoting trade competitiveness.
The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Public Procurement, was addressing the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, alongside his management team, who paid him a courtesy visit at his office at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.
“Your role of providing effective clearance of goods crossing the borders and anti-smuggling services are very critical to our country’s economic survival, security, and how we fare in the Comity of Nations.
The complaint about our borders being porous leaves a heavy task on your shoulders, and we, at the National Assembly, and indeed all Nigerians, expect you to carry out your responsibilities with utmost diligence. You hold your positions in trust for the country and you must not let us down.
Your synergy with sister security agencies is very key to helping us achieve a safe nation, and not a thoroughfare, for every Tom, Dick and Harry,” Idem noted.
Speaking earlier, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, who led his management team to the visit, said the engagement was to seek the National Assembly’s support to enable the service “excel in the efficient and timely collection and accounting for revenue, implementation of Governmental trade and fiscal policies, promotion of trade facilitation and protection of the Nigerian society.”
